He walked down the darkened hallway, beat and ready to call it a night. A hand reached out and grabbed his loosened tie. He was pulled into an almost deserted side hallway and pushed against the wall. He recognized his attacker a moment before her lips met his. His eyes slammed shut as his body awakened. He put his hand to her neck and pulled her mouth closer. She moaned as her body pushed his into the wall.

"Shhh." He cautioned her, breaking the kiss for a moment.

She pushed his head back to the wall as her tongue darted out to gain access to his mouth. He felt her smiling against him in humor at his caution. She licked his lips and he struggled to hold back his own moan. He wrapped his arm around her waist and tried to bring her closer, not realizing that she was already as close as she could be with clothes on.

She pulled away to kiss his cheek on her way to his ear. She only got to blow gently into her ear once before she gasped at his lips on her neck. She tilted her head to allow him more access and tangled her fingers in his curly hair. He made a note to thank her for wearing flats today. Then he jerked back as he heard a door slam nearby. She sighed and kissed him deeply again, reluctantly pulling back slowly. She pulled a napkin out of her pocket and wiped the lipstick off his lips, then smiled and whispered, "Thanks. Go take a cold shower, I'll see you tomorrow."

She walked away, only glancing back twice with a grin, while he stood there until he could regain the knowledge of how to walk.

"You're crazy." She smiled as she sat down next to him on the couch.

He grinned. "I fit in here then."

She met his eyes, the retort dying on her lips as she realized he was right. She grinned back at him as his smile faded and his face took on a serious look. He reached out a hand and gently touched her face, pretending to himself that he was brushing hairs out of her eyes when he really just craved the feel of her skin. She whispered his name and he dropped all pretense. He leaned forward slowly, giving her time to pull away if she wanted. She didn't even consider it as her eyes slowly closed in anticipation. The light pressure on her lips made her sigh with contentment.

He tangled his fingers gently in her hair, wondering fleetingly if their children would have her red hair or his. He broke the slight touch on her lips and moved up her face, kissing her cheeks on his way to her eyes. They were still closed as he kissed each one, imagining what her eyes would look like in different situations. In a flash, he imagined her eyes seductive on their honeymoon, sparking with anger at their first big fight, sleepy after their first time making love, full of love on their wedding day, staring in wonder at their first child. He vowed he would be there to see her eyes in the years to come when all those things came true.

He gently touched her eyelids and kissed her hair, breathing deeply to always remember the scent of her perfume. He stood slowly as he continued to stroke her hair. She opened her eyes and, for once, looked up at him. He saw contentment in her eyes.

"You're waiting for me." Her pronouncement was full of the wonder that he realized was also in her eyes.

He smiled sadly. "As long as it takes. It'll be worth it."

"Are you sure?" He could see the self-doubt creeping in.

"You're worth it." He told her, tilting her head up and kissing her cheek. "Remember I love you. I'll be here at the end. And we'll make it our beginning."

She nodded as he quietly stepped away and out the door, closing it softly behind him.

"Why is it dark in here?"

A strange yet familiar voice answered her. "Because the lights are off."

"Who's there?" she asked, sure she was wrong on her first assumption.

Suddenly, she was pinned to the door with a searing kiss. "Oh." she sighed when he had backed off a few millimeters. "It's you. So my meeting..."

"Was a clever ruse."

"I'll have to thank your cohort tomorrow." She reached for him, but he was quicker. He cushioned her head with the hand on the back of her neck as he pushed her against the door. Her hands hung in the air as her brain was overloaded with thoughts of all the places she wanted to touch him. He made the decision for one hand by tangling his fingers with hers. Her other hand settled on his chest, gripping his shirt to pull him closer.

He tasted beer on her lips and realized she must have been relaxing in her office after a long day before she had gotten the phone call. He wondered if she had even put her shoes back on to pad through the hallways. He hadn't noticed in the dark before, he had been too focused on her lips. He realized now that either she had left them in her office or she had taken them off again as her toes crept a few inches up his pant leg. He groaned and forgot even the idea of being gentle as he plundered her mouth, tasting the crackers she must have been eating with her beer.

The phone rang, but he kept her in place and gently eased back. He told her, breathless, "That's our cue to clear out. I have to go, but I promise I'll be back again. For good."

She yanked him closer by his shirt and kissed him again hungrily, trying to block out the ringing. He took her fingers from his shirt and gently untangled each one. He kissed the tear off of her cheek gently and pulled her away from the door. He smiled sadly at her for a moment, then left.

They ate quietly, glancing at each other every few moments and looking quickly away. They sat across from one another on the end of the table and tried to ignore the others around them while also feigning interest in what those people were saying.

She nodded sedately at a comment as she slipped her foot out of her high heels. No one could see under the table and they were killing her. She pivoted her foot to get the kinks out and touched something solid. Her eyes flickered to the one sitting across from her and she realized his eyes were on her.

She laughed politely at a joke as she wiggled her toes up his pant leg, enjoying the gasp that he smothered before anyone except her could hear it. Her smile flashed at those around her was genuine.

He coughed to cover up his gasp and took a sip of water. He nodded at the comments of those at the table while slowly reaching under it to grab her foot.

He smiled at the table in general when a genial comment was made about him and used the opportunity to fake a shy slump and move his hand lower.

She shook her head at a comment and at her own single-mindedness. She hadn't realized how far up her foot had gone until it had been grabbed. It was now being held captive on his lap.

She grimaced but hid it by sipping her juice as he began to lightly touch the heel of her foot. His fingers crept higher and she lost where the conversation was headed.

He shook a few hands as people began to trickle out. He was content to stay seated. His hand then reached down to grasp hers, glancing her way again to benignly include her in the waning conversation while caressing her with his eyes.

He waved to the few people who were left as they walked out the door. He dropped her foot on the floor and leaned over the table towards her smiling face.

"Kiss me, you tease."

She slammed the door shut and locked it, willing the tears not to come. Knowing that no one would disturb her for a few minutes and the futility of holding back the tears, she gave in and they slid down her face.

"Please don't cry." He pleaded from his hiding place on her couch. She turned and whispered his name as the tears dried. She stood, waiting to wake up from her dream as he stepped closer and crushed his mouth to hers. Her last sob died in her throat as he kissed her face. He touched her cheeks gently with the pads of his finger to brush the tears away.

She pulled away and opened her eyes. She touched his face and hair to be sure he was real, then smiled faintly as her eyes began to fill again. "You're here," she breathed. He nodded and kissed her again, missing the feel of her already since he knew he would have to leave again soon. He ran his fingers lightly up her sides and she gasped. He took the opportunity to kiss her deeply but gently. She melted in his arms and moaned as he eased closer.

He pulled away and looked at her face until she opened her eyes. "Please don't cry again." He whispered.

"It's hard. You're not here." she told him truthfully, wishing her truthfulness could change something for them. A knock sounded tentatively on her door and she smiled sadly. "And now I have to go. Will we ever get this right?"

He kissed her softly, chastely. "One of these days."

She watched him as he sat back down on the couch, in the shadows where he could be invisible to whoever was at the door. She smiled sadly and wiped her eyes before she straightened her shoulders and walked out, never giving a hint that there was another person in her office as she softly shut it behind her.
